Growing up biracial means a lot of different things for different people. For me, part of it was always having to explain that no I don’t eat cats and I eat more then just Spaghetti and Meatballs. I suppose I was spoiled growing up, well when it came to the diversity in the types of foods I enjoyed on a nightly basis. One night I would have Pasta with my dad’s “secret” ragu recipe and the next night I would have Loc Lac! Damn that was good. By the time I was 13 I could whip up Italian and Cambodian dishes with relative ease.
I now find myself at a point in my life where I am trying to bring these two almost impossibly different cultures together. How in the HELL do I bring my father’s “Northern Italian” background together with my mother’s Cambodian background. They haven’t even been able to do that! And they have been married for 24+ years!
So, I think my dear friend and Empress, Juztin put it best. He will master Khmer Nouveau and I will master Khmer Fusion! It’s so simple! (Or is it?) But I suppose that it’s probably the best place to start. If nothing else the foods should be able to be blended in some way, shape, or form… right?
You tell me! Feel free to send me some of your ideas and I will go “Top Chef” style and try to whip something up!
